Within the historic
ramparts of the fort Amangalla offers the leisurely experience of
a bygone era
Location: Amangalla lies at the heart of the 17th
century Galle Fort at 155 km south of the international airport. A step
out of the front door takes guests into the living history that is the
Fort. Here the narrow streets are lined with old houses, displaying their
Dutch heritage with pillared verandas.
Accommodation:
Bedrooms The ten
bedrooms comprise a separate bedroom and bathroom. Seven bedrooms are
located adjacent to Amangalla’s reception, on the ground level of the
Middle Street Wing. Views are either overlooking the garden or the nearby
historic Groote Kerk (Great Church). Three bedrooms are set within the
property’s gardens. French windows and doors open onto the garden entrance
of each room. Bedrooms range from 36 to 39 square metres.
Chambers The ten Chambers comprise a separate bedroom, bathroom
and living area. Six chambers are located within the Church Street Wing
and face the Fort ramparts, with views through the ancient para trees,
over the Fort and out to sea. There are four Garden Wing chambers, three
with balconies and one with a twin porch – all over-looking the treetops
of the resort garden. Chambers range in size from 55 to 67 square metres.
Suites
The eight Suites comprise a separate bedroom, bathroom and spacious living
room. There are six located in the Church Street Wing, with views onto
para trees, the ramparts of the Fort and the harbour. The two in the
historical Middle Street Wing look out over the mature tropical gardens of
the hotel. Suites range in size from 60 to 80 square metres.
The Garden House
(The Garden House is serviced by a 24-hour private butler). Situated
within the resort gardens, this two-storey, 140 square metre house
features a private terrace and balcony offering leafy treetop views. The
original antique furniture of the house has been restored.
Bathrooms provide twin vanities, shower room, separate water closet and
freestanding bath tubs
Facilities:
Amangalla is a collection of buildings dating back to 1684. They have been
used as headquarters for the Dutch commandeur and his officers and
later as a billet for British officers. In 1863, the buildings were
combined to create the New Oriental Hotel, to service the never ending
stream of ships and steamers, heading to and from the East. As the New
Oriental Hotel, the property traded for 140 years, it is the oldest hotel
in Sri Lanka and the oldest consistently registered hotel in whole of
Asia!
The Great Hall offers inside and on the adjacent verandah light
meals, snacks and afternoon tea The dining room & bar provide separate
intimate settings with a colonial accent, here breakfast, lunch & dinner
is served The library with his own attached reading terrace offers books,
magazines, newspapers, audio CDs and board games, a computer station
provided internet access.
Sports & leisure:
The swimming pool in the gardens with sun lounges and sune shades offer
poolside service of beverages, light meals & snacks, The Bath treatment
room and hydrotherapy area help to restoring the body and smoothing
the mind.
